Class Descriptions

 

 Choreography / Composition

 This class will give the students tools for the process of creating their own work. We will discuss structures, levels, formations, stage utilization as well as ways in how to manipulate a phrase or a motif. We will talk about the importance of use of props, sets and costume, how this elements are essencial in the creative process. We will also have the chance to talk about music, listening and discuss the used of music as part of their development.


Post Modern

Typical dance class structure(warm up, across the floor, centered, combination, cool-down), in this class will learn some post-modern (pedestrian, animalistic and abstract movements). The class will also involved some tools of improvisation. Concentration will take place on floor work. We will work with the used of the NOW and training your face to reflect what are you experience at the moment. Participants, will need to have some experiences in modern and improvisation. Bare feet, tight clothing and lots of open mind will help the process of this class more enjoyable.

 

African and Latin movements

Typical structure (warm up, across the floor, centered, combination, cool-down). We will taped into some fast rhythmic movements and learn how these dance discipline, impacted most genres of dance in present times.

 

Contact-Improvisation

We will fine-tune your senses and wake up your ability to listen and respond to what is happening in the moment. Movement is inspired by the spontaneous interaction between dancers playing with weight, momentum and gravity. Participants will learn basic principles of how to give and bear weight with optimum efficiency and how to execute partnering moves with integrity

 

Solo Improvisation

Introductions will be made by performing a 2 minutes solo work. There will be a series of games, exercises or situations where our skills as a performer will be tested. These games will give you ideas in how to increase the knowledge in breaking your patterns. Authentic Movement, Site Specific, Installations, Mapping a Dance, Trilogy, Grids, are some of the activities we will explore.


 Self-Massage Techniques for Movers (Somatic class)

Using Acupressure and Oriental Theory, Working with Trigger points, Yin / Yang, Chakras, Five Element Theory and Meridian Locations, this class will give you the knowledge in how to self-heal your body by using your own electromagnetic energy; your own tools: thumbs, elbows, knuckles or palms as well as proper use of pressure, breath and energy. We will learn how to help to release tension from specific muscles like: periformis, psoas, glutes, illiopsoas, pectoral major/minor, rhomboids, upper traps and scalenes.

 

Meditation for Movers (Somatic class)

Meditation is simply making a choice to focus your mind on something. Meditation has the potential to ease your life and create a positive future. Benefits are: physical, mental, emotional, psychological and spiritual. The class will start with Body Scan, the use of breath and gravity will help us to identify areas of tensions and focus to release the tension. Then we will finish with Music Therapy/Slow movements and Visual Scanning/Connection of the group.


Site-specific studies 

This class concentrates in analyzing the elements of space, time, movements, structure, what the space needs? and finally the meaning connected to the movements and the space. The class takes us outside of the dance studio into the real world. The world around us become our stage.

Professional experience

Forestry

·      1989-2000 work with the Alberta Forester Service, Geowest, and Forestry Corp, forestry inventories, regeneration surveys, PSP, and aerial photographing inventory creating forestry map.

·      1998 Spanish/English translator for a Forestry workshop at Hinton headquarters.

·      1982-83 work for IRENA, National Institute of Natural Resources in Nicaragua, Forestry Inventories in Zelaya area. 

·      Certification in all train vehicle use, II level of photo interpretation and driving heavy equipment.

·      2009 - work for Judy Dworin Project Moving Matters working with children at M.D. Fox Elementary School - creative dance.

·      2008 -2009 teach summer dance intensives in Nicaragua (Managua, Leon and Granada) and Costa Rica as well as performing and conducting talks about modern dance.

·      2006 2008 founder of the Orchesis Summer Dance Intensive at the University of Alberta, as well as teaching improvisation and somatic classes.

·      2003 Trinity College offered a workshop in improvisation and performed on the studio 47 series.

·      2006-2007  Unity dance ensemble from Waterbury modern/Latin/African dance instructor and choreographing.

·      2006- outreach program under the direction of Brett Raphael, Connecticut Ballet.
